Just like any sport, dog agility can be very rewarding, both for the dog and his trainer. It requires commitment and dedication but when you have a devoted team the results are very gratifying. Whether you choose to take it to a competitive level or just as a pass time in your backyard it can be a lot of fun.

Kids who love animals will truly enjoy dog agility. They learn important characteristics such as respect and trust, and the bond that’s formed as they work together with their dog as a team transcends any medal or ribbon they might receive. There are youth kennel clubs across the country where kids can get involved in dog agility. Here is a good example of the competitive side of dog agility. The Crufts 2012, YKC Agility Competition:

Getting started in dog agility will require some training equipment. Some cities have training centers where the equipment is provided. However, you can purchase an inexpensive agility set to set up in your backyard for recreational dog agility. A good trainer to teach you how to handle your dog, the rules of the sport, and techniques for various breeds is also important.

Find a local kennel club in your area and see if your dog has what it takes to master a dog agility course. You may discover that your dog is a natural at the sport!
